Question: What kind of music is best for me to listen to?

Answer: There are several things to consider.

does God
like music?

Zephaniah 3:27 --- "The Lord your God has arrived to live among you... He will exult over you by singing a happy song."

God not only created music, He's also a singer.

Psalm 147:1 --- "How good it is to sing praises to our God! How delightful and how right!"

God delights when we use music to praise Him.

what role does
music have
in worship?

2 Chronicles 23:13 --- "The officers and trumpeters were surrounding him, and people from all over the land were rejoicing and blowing trumpets. Singers with musical instruments were leading the people in a great celebration."

All throughout the Bible, we read about how music played a key role in worshiping God.

Psalm 81:2-4 --- "Sing! Beat the tambourine. Play the sweet lyre and the harp. Sound the trumpet for a sacred feast when the moon is new, when the moon is full. For this is required by the laws of Israel; it is a good law of the God of Jacob."

There are many different types of instruments that can be used in music and worhsip.

David saw music as a required part of worship.

are there types
of music that we
shouldn't listen to?

Philippians 4:8 --- "Now dear brothers and sisters, let me say one more thing as I close this letter. Fix your thoughts on what is true, honorable, and right. Think about things that are pure, lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise."

We should protect our minds from things that aren't pure, untrue, not honorable, or wrong. We should keep music out of our minds that is unworthy of praise and unadmirable.... and so forth.

but I don't listen
to the words.
I just like the music.

We might think this is possible, but it's not.

For example, have you ever been listening to a song that you used to listen to a long time ago... and be singing the words without even realizing it? Most people have experienced something similar to this. Even though they may not have realized it a long time ago, their brains were recording those lyrics into their memory.

We are influenced by what we put into our minds. Garbage in - garbage out. Good stuff in - good stuff out. It always works that way. Always. Even if it takes time for things to influence us, if we constantly put good things into our minds, it will eventually come back out in our words, actions, and attitude.

Why not put good things into our minds? Why not spend more of our 'listening' time with Christian music?

Just a little something to think and pray about.
